Diary 25 (when ripples collide)

Let me start by saying I’m not sure how to convey this story in words. Words don’t do it justice but I’ll try.
Have you ever watched rain fall on a lake? Each raindrop creates its own ripple. When you combine the millions of raindrops and the millions of ripples that each singularly creates, you have a countless number of overlapping ripples that all have an effect on one another. The cool thing about this is that each raindrops ripple has an effect on the other ripples in the lake, even if it’s just in a small way. This is how people operate on a daily basis. We are individual raindrops in a huge lake. Of course each of us has our own ripple, but our lives are primarily made up of other peoples ripples crashing into our own. Many people like to think that our ripples crash randomly into each other without purpose or reason. Maybe that’s true, but then again maybe it’s not true at all. Perhaps I can help you decide. Maybe this story is the result of many ripples just coincidentally crashing into each other. Or maybe each ripple was ordered, measured, weighed, named, and timed perfectly to synchronize with the others to save a life.
The story I am about to tell shows what happens when ripples collide perfectly.
Ripple 1.)
Just about every day someone approaches me and tells me how much they enjoy my writing, this is always humbling because I was never a good writer while I was in school. It’s strange to now be a published writer and have zero writing experience or background. It’s even more insane to get a request to speak to a high school creative writing class! What do I say? “Hi, my name is Baron. I failed English, let me show you my writing skills?”  I’m not really sure how things got to this point where writing is such a huge part of who I am. Maybe it’s all a coincidence. Maybe everything is just random, and this is another one of my crazy hobbies that I have picked up; just like the time I watched the Karate Kid marathon and then researched bonsai trees and decided I needed one. Or maybe there is a reason, maybe there is an order, maybe there could possibly be a plan.
Maybe someone, somewhere, at some time, needed to read something that I would at some point write.
Would it be far-fetched to say that there is a reason you are standing where you are standing at this exact moment and reading these words at this exact time? Would it be far fetched to say that a small decision that you see as pointless or routine could save a life? Perhaps we are all far more connected than anyone can see or comprehend. Maybe one day you will save my life. It’s not as far-fetched as you may think.  Maybe everything is just a coincidence, but maybe its not.
Get on board, buckle up, and lets take a trip.
Ripple 2.)
Back in August I approached the Midland Reporter Telegram and the Lubbock Avalanche Journal about possibly writing a weekly column chronicling my senior year at Texas Tech. After talking with both papers I came to the decision that my column would run every Wednesday. Maybe the fact that we agreed on Wednesday was simply random. What if we would have decided on a Thursday? No biggie right? Would if be far-fetched to say that this would be a life or death decision?
Ripple 3.)
As the season progressed I continued to write every week. However, it became increasingly difficult to write my column especially after a loss. People said that I wasn’t focused and it was hurting the team. There were weeks I told myself that I was just going to quit writing. I rationalized my thinking by telling myself that I should probably just focus all my attention on football, and that writing was distracting me.  It probably wouldn’t have been a big deal if I had missed a week right? Every part of me wanted to quit writing my column. After the Oklahoma State loss I decided I was going to discontinue my column. A friend talked me into continuing my writing by saying “maybe someone needs to hear something you have to say Baron.”  I decided not to stop. I’m glad I didn’t.
This is where ripples collide.
Ripple 4.)
Last Monday I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed. It’s not as bad as everyone makes it out to be, so the next day I decided that I wanted to have a steak.  As I was strolling through the meat section of the supermarket directly violating the dentists orders to eat only soft foods, something happened that changed the way I will use the word random.
As I was checking out the price on ribeye steaks an older man came up to me with his hand extended and said, “Your Baron Batch and I just want to shake your hand and say thank you”.
I could tell by the look in his eyes that the handshake meant much more than I imagined. The look in his eyes was different than if he was just a regular Texas Tech fan. The man just continued to shake my hand while staring at me; it started to get awkward the amount of time his hand clung to mine. I thought to myself “gees this guy is acting like I saved his life or something.” Finally he let go of my hand but still didn’t speak a word. Of all the awkward Texas Tech fan moments I have experienced this one had been the most awkward for sure. I got nervous when he prefaced his conversation with “I don’t expect you to respond to what I’m about to tell you”
Ripple 5.)
Finally he released  his grasp and spoke words that I will never forget. This is what he said:
You saved my life. Five months ago I had given up, I was going to end it all.  It was a Wednesday (ripple 2). I felt like I had nothing else to live for. I had my pistol in my lap while I sat at my desk. I had set newspaper out around the floor so I wouldn’t make a mess for whoever found me. I was about to do it. Right before I pulled the trigger I looked down and saw a piece of newspaper that said, “The easiest thing in the world to do is quit.” I put the gun down and started to read more. It was a column that you had written. Your column saved me. Thank you.

I’m glad that he told me that he didn’t expect me to respond because I was speechless. I was in awe. I was stunned. Before I could even think of anything to say back to him he said, “I’m doing much better now. I feel like you just needed to know that you’re making a huge difference.” Then he walked away.

I’m not an emotional person at all but I almost cried in the meat section of the United Supermarket. At that exact moment all of those random coincidences swirled into one beautiful event that made perfect sense.

What if I had chose to have my column run on a Thursday instead of a Wednesday? It would have been a day late. What if I had given up writing my column simply because the season wasn’t going as I wanted? There are hundreds of ripples that if any had been changed would have NOT resulted in the perfect situation for that man to sit the gun down. What if my column had been printed on another page of the newspaper? I was in complete awe, and still am.

I was curious to find out what the exact column the man had read by what he described it said.

Ripple 6.)

This is why I am even more in awe. I went back and found out what column he had read and this is the paragraph he saw.

“The easiest thing in the world to do is quit on something. Quitting takes zero effort. Quitting can even be justified with excuses and legitimate reasons at times. When someone quits at something they can even lie to themselves by saying that what they quit on wasn’t that important. To those people with that mentality this is what I have to say. If it was important enough to start, it is important enough to finish. Don’t quit. Hold on, cling to what is yours until your fingers cramp; and once your fingers cramp switch hands.”

Ripple 7.)

I wrote that column on October 18th after a loss to Oklahoma State in mid October. There are a few reasons why I find it mind blowing that was the column that the man had read.
Ripple 8.)

I wasn’t going to write a column that week. After the Oklahoma State loss I had decided I wasn’t going to write anymore. The reason I wrote about not quitting in my column that week was because I really wanted to quit and never write again. Good thing I didn’t quit.

Ripple 9.)

The other is reason that its mind blowing that was the column that the man read is because of the date it was actually written. When I went back and looked on my blog history, the date I posted that was October 18th. So why is that date important?

Let me tell you why, and I’m getting chills as I write this. October 18th was the date I broke my ankle my freshman year. The reason this date is important to me is because if I wouldn’t have been injured I would have never redshirted and in result would have only played at Texas Tech for 4 years instead of 5; meaning that this past season for me wouldn’t have existed, and neither would the column I wrote.

Ripple 10.)

In all reality the only reason any of you are reading this right now is simply because I was at the wrong place at the wrong time on October 18th 2006 around 3:30pm  and broke my ankle my freshman year. Or maybe the reason you are reading this is because I was at the perfect place at the perfect time and broke my ankle so that our ripples would collide.

This will be my 25thcolumn and I never would have imagined that it would have morphed into what it has. I never thought I would be known as a writer or be approached to write books. I mean seriously, I was the kid who hated English class and still don’t really enjoy reading.I had to share that story with everyone simply because its blown my mind for the past few days. Maybe that’s all just one humongous coincidence and series of random events that I somehow constructed into a story. Maybe its all luck and chance, maybe you stumbled on this article randomly surfing the web. Maybe nothing we do matters at all………but……. what if everything does?

God Bless.

This is an awesome story, showing the awesome power that we have just the slightest inkling of ability to grasp. There's always a reason, no matter how great the pain may be at the time.

Thank you for continuing to share your thoughts and experiences. I am far from an English major, but I'd venture to guess that very few of the best writers of our time were A+ English students. You can tell those creative writing students how you came to write like you do now and how it wasn't as huge of a mountain to climb like you thought. Keep up the faith. Thanks again.

This is from someone who doesn't even know you. I was looking on my newsfeeds on my Facebook wall and someone put your link on their status telling people to read your blog. I clicked on the link to your blog and then scrolled down quickly looking at the blog. To be honest I wasn't going to read it, I thought it was too long and that it would be a waste of my time. I left your site open to just listen to your music while I was cleaning my house. I couldn't stop wondering what you had wrote, esp since someone even posted it on their FB status. So…I read it. I am so glad I did! What an amazing story. God is a good good God! It's amazing the talents HE has given you and your obedience to Him, even when you don't realize it. This story gives me more reasons to thank God today and to praise the name of Jesus! You didn't mention God once in this blog, but you didn't have to. The whole time I read it all I could think about was how great our God is. He is so proud of YOU!

    Baron,
You may not remember me. My name is Mrs Compton. You were my 1st grade class PAL from Midland High School your Junior or Senior year. My class followed you in the newspaper and you even came back for a pep rally to encourage the students to work hard. You meant the world to the kids and I told the teachers that You were someone special…and look at you! I thought maybe it was just your destiny to make your mark as a football star, but you are obviously making a mark on lives still. I am so proud of you! Thanks to the FB post I now know that you are still making your mark! Steady on Baron…steady on! Hi Baron,

My Husband and I met on a blind date while both attending Texas Tech. I gradudated in 1995 and we are avid followers of Texas Tech football. Two of my Sorority Sisters posted the link to this blog entry and something made me click on the link, even though I normally don't follow blogs or take time to click on links because I guess I consider myself too busy. I am glad I did, this really moved me. You write very well and I will continue to read your blog. Please keep it up, you are a very interesting and refreshing young man. Take that as a sincere compliment from another sarcastic person!!! I am a busy, full time working Mom of an almost 3 year old, but I will take time to seek you out, you are a breath of fresh air!!!

Someday, I will write you and tell you the story that changed my life and career path in 2003, but right now, I truly need to get some sleep and I want to tell the story right.

    God bless you baron!

Guys! Thanks for all the support and I'm glad that you enjoyed reading this story that I was able to put into words. I just want to make it clear that by no means do I deserve credit for this story. I dont mean that in any sort of negative way but I just want everyone to know that if God wouldnt have used me he would have probably just used someone else. The cool thing about being able to see this story unfold is knowing that I was the one that was chosen to be used. I encourage all of you to rejoice in the fact that all of you are being used some way and some how to help someone that you might not ever meet. Thanks for all the support it means so much to me, I'm humbled to know that so many of you think so highly of me. Thanks again and I love you all.

I went back to college in January at 31 years old. I have struggled the last few months with so much in my life, as this endeavor has challenged and changed me in ways I couldn't even begin to prepare for or understand. I have written my own blog for a couple of years now, and I have seriously considered giving it up. Mostly because I felt like a fraud, I've felt like I had nothing in common with anyone anymore, and nothing to offer to my readers and that I was way out of my league with everything that I did. Today, after reading your blog, and this post, I have ralized that I have just lost my voice. I quit on the most important person, me. I started worrying about everyone else's ripples and how they affected my thoughts, my actions, my life and I forgot about making my own ripples.

Someone once told me that if you want to change someone else's perspective, that you simply had to change your own. Your blog and your actions are causing ripples that you aren't even aware of. Thank you for reminding me that I am worthy, and that I just had to find my voice.

Wow! What an amazing writer you are! I saw this on facebook today and began reading. In this one short weekend I was saddened by two sucides of 2 young adults,(both very bright & highly thought of & unrelated to the other), but each had sadness most of us did not know. While I was reading comments from one of your Red Raiders fans I thought, ohmygosh, I know this young lady & sure enough, Christine is my daughter. Yes, she has a story to share with you. Baron, KEEP writing! We never know how many lives we touch, but every now & then we hear a story & WOW what a difference a day (or cloumn) makes! You are so right~Never quit, never give up! God is in control & He is such a loving God & everything happens for a reason. I am also a believer that something good will come out of everything that happens, as difficult as it seems at the time. Although these 2 dear lives will be so missed by their love ones & those are the ones whose hearts are hurting so now!
May God continue to bless you. Clarann McCoy

I'm a head coach of a middle school here in Lubbock and Baron used to come to our school every Wednesday at 7 AM for an entire semester. to lead our Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). This is just one example of the things Baron does that the general public never notices and that he never asks for credit when doing. I didn't know anything about you Baron before this time except of what my friend Haleigh told me of you. And she was spot on when telling me you were one of the most awesome, humble guys she'd ever known. I was right there in agreeance with her after seeing you walk through our school doors week after week speaking to kids whom you didn't know and whom many were wearing UT apparell while you spoke to them about being a good christian and an even better human being. You are a rare breed amongst most athletes these days who influence our youth in a negative manner. As a coach who works with these kids on a daily basis, I want to say THANK YOU for your positive influence towards young athletes who need role models just like you for inspiration and motivation to not only be a better athlete, but be a better person. Good luck down the road in writing or whatever it is you are pursuing. You deserve all good things that come to you bud.

Another ripple. My child is being bullied at school to the point she is doing things in class to try to get kicked out of class. I have been trying to encourage her to do the right thing, the wrong thing, or anything!! I read this and realized that the bully for some reason is making those ripples, and for some reason beyond my comprehension my child is just one of those affected. I am going to share this with her so that she will know that there is hope…perhaps from a ripple from you. She is ready to quit school, but I feel that my reading this is not by accident bu divine intervention. I can now encourage her not to quit but to seek out our loving God and press onward! Thank you for sharing your story. God Bless You!!!

This year we have been studying Genesis and our theme has been PURPOSE….verse for the year Psalm 33:11, "But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations." As soon as I read your blog from March 25th I knew this would be what I closed with as my charge to our Seniors. We had around 42 Teens and Leaders there last night. As I read your blog….you could have heard a pin drop. My seniors GOT IT! I had one of our younger students post on her facebook wall "You're never in the wrong place at the wrong time. Baron, I liked you the first time I heard you speak after you led the 'Dogs to victory. You gave credit to the Lord instead of bragging. You were so refreshing and continued to be so with my beloved Red and Black.

You have rippled me and I am 25. Seems that nobody at my church could care less that there is nobody showing up for the jobs that they volunteer for and there and fewer and fewer volunteers.

It became so hopeless and frustrating and aggravating after a woman cancelled out for the umteenth time in a row at the last second and left me holding the bag again that I texted the director and told him that I was quitting.

I than thought about this column and the people who depend on me and agreed that quitting was not the way to go. Now, I have recruited several volunteers myself and hopefully we are turning a corner.

How prophetic that fellow was who told you to write that column because you might affect somebody. Boy, did you ever! Thanks so much, Baron!

Baron I have to say I found you because I'm a steelers fan but reading your posts have made me a Baron Batch fan. You are an exceptional person i'm glad to have come across in this online world … call me Ripple #158 give or take a few. I will not presume to know how your mother would feel about you but I can tell you with absolute sincerity that if my son turns out anything like you have I'll be one proud momma. May you have an adulthood overflowing with the comforts your childhood lacked.

Thank you for writing this blog. I am on a softball team and we were doing so good at the beginning of the year that we won our tourney, until we had a few girls quit the team, girls i never thought would quit. That day our pitcher quit our coach read this blog to us and the most important thing that stood out to me was, "If it was important enough to start, it is important enough to finish. Don’t quit. Hold on, cling to what is yours until your fingers cramp; and once your fingers cramp switch hands." because its so true and from there on out I think we only won 1 game out of.. a lot.. with out our pitcher but the best thing I can say is not one other girl quit and it's because of you we're so strong now. Thank you so much Baron. God bless you!

From Austin Texas… Well done son! Your ripple is such a blessing and it's moving further and further out. What an inspiration to let God use us as the vessels He's intended. He can do great things when we stop getting in the way. ;) Thank you for sharing this story and I pray your ripple continues across the globe. Nothing is too big for God, so expectantly I will pray for and all those you have and will touch. God Bless You!

Baron, I hope the man in this story keeps up with your writing, which considering what it meant for him, I bet he does! I hope he read this blog entry, and I hope he realized how much God loves him. Every single event leading up to that exact article on that exact page of that newspaper on that day was orchestrated by God to reach him in his hour of need. God knew exactly how to call out to him and exactly what it would take, and He did it all! Sir, if you are reading any of this, God loves you so much more than you will ever know. He loves you enough to walk those 999 steps so that you will take that one (as Baron says in his testimony). God loves all of us more than we can understand, but this man's story gives me a little glimpse of it. Baron, you are so blessed that God used you for this. Thank you for sharing!

Just met a new member to our family in Laramie,WY this last weekend. She turned me on to your writing. Just remember that when you play OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY there are MOM's like me, looking at players like you, and saying that's somebody's SON! That is how we view you! My friend's son is TRESS WAY! I have an autographed, framed poster that includes the ticket stubb from when OU beat Oklahoma State. But he is my friend's SON! Another RIPPLE!

You have inspired me so much. When you came to me school (Hal Peterson Kerrville) you said that everyone is unique. That really stood out to me because I was always trying to fit in. Bying all the expensive stuff like the "popular" kids. But now i know i can wear what I want and actually be me for once.
