Operation Random Christmas Blessing
Someone recently asked me what I wanted for Christmas. This was an especially weird question for me this year. I guess it was a weird question because now I’m in the position financially to buy myself anything that I really want as far as Christmas gifts go. Yeah when I was a broke college kid this was different. When I was in college yeah sure there were tons of things that broke college kids need or want that I’d ask for.
I have never been a person who likes receiving gifts though. I’m always kind of awkward about it simply because….well….I’m not sure why.
I have always loved giving things.
For as cheap as I can be, I love giving presents. The funny thing is I don’t like giving Christmas presents because I hate the idea that people just sit around and wait on a present, or feel entitled to get what they want. This really bugs me about Christmas I guess. Call me Scrooge if you want, because I’ll say, “bah-humbug” all day to that. I do however love giving gifts to random people when they aren’t expecting it. I think there is something so awesome about doing things for people that have no idea it was coming. With that being said this Christmas will be special.
My family has never been big on Christmas gifts. We were always content with simply being around each other. It’s weird because this is the first time in my life that I can actually buy all of my family members something for Christmas. Never in my life have I bought Christmas presents, not because I didn’t want to but because I couldn’t. I guess that’s why I always felt weird about receiving them. I made up my mind that this Christmas would be different. I made my mind up that this Christmas I would go all out with the presents. I decided that everyone I loved would get something awesome.
Over the past few days I have felt super guilty for some reason about doing this. I couldn’t figure out why this was. I couldn’t put my finger on it, and then today I realized the reason. I guess the idea of buying material things for people that have everything that they need just was heavy on my heart, especially after being over seas doing mission work, and thinking about what the amount of money I would spend on all of my gifts could do for someone else that really needed it. I wanted to do something randomly good for someone else.
So I went online and began to add up the price of everything that I had put in my online shopping carts for all the people I was buying gifts for and wrote down the total. I remember looking at that and thinking “gees” there are people out there that could really use this way more than my family. So I decided that some how I would figure out a way to give that amount away to a random person that I didn’t know that needed it. The tricky part was figuring out who this would be, and how I would do it.
So today I had coffee with a friend and he and his wife are thinking about adopting a child. I started thinking hmmm, maybe I could find a way to give this money to a random couple that’s adopting. Being that adoption isn’t cheap, I realized that it was the perfect idea. So I had no clue how I would go about finding a random couple that’s adopting to do this for. I remember as I walked home from the coffee shop I was at I said a little prayer, and this is what I said.
“God just please bring a family to me that needs a financial blessing so this all works out.”
I got home and got on my computer and began to check emails and Facebook. Low and behold I had been sent a message from a girl I went to high school with that I haven’t spoke with really since then. I began to read the message and it explained how God had put on her heart a family that is adopting a little girl named Emme from Ethiopia. I just smiled and thought, “God you are too good.” So then and there I decided that this would be the family.
So here’s the deal. I want to allow all of you to get involved with this Christmas present as well! For the next 12 days until Christmas day I will pledge 25 cents for every new person that follows me on twitter, up until the cutoff amount that I was originally going to spend on my family and friends for Christmas. And no I’m not going to tell you guys how much that amount was until after Christmas day, so it will kind of be like a Christmas present to all of you as well! All I will say is that if we meet this goal it’s going to be a huge blessing to an awesome family that I have never met!
Please go read about the Knight Family and their story HERE!!!
Currently I have 14,375 people following me on twitter! So on your mark ,get set, go!!!

Baron,
What a great idea. I work with a guy who he and his wife adopt children. We were just talking about how expensive it was yesterday. You are a inspiration and a true blessing to many.
Blessings, Matt
God bless you Baron! As a dad to 3 kids (all through adoption from Ethiopia) my heart swells up reading this. Go do good man! I LOVE IT!!!
You r just simply awesome.
This is amazing. My husband and I adopted in July of 2010 and it has been the biggest blessing ever. Your post really touched my heart! You are a blessing to all of us as well.
Baron, you are a true blessing to others. I too have taken on another family to bless. I felt that my family had enough gifts and we needed to make some changes. I chose a single mom with 4 girls to bless. Merry Christmas to you and I know God will continue to bless you.
This is just awesome!! We are also in the process of adopting from Ethiopia, so I can definitely understand what a HUGE blessing this will be to the family!! And, I gotta put it out there…….I’m a lifelong steelers fan, and this is just another thing that makes me LOVE my black & gold! God bless & best wishes for a healthy season next year!
I love this man. My wife has had a very heavy heart this season about the materialism of Christmas, and so have I. So to hear this story blesses me, because Christmas is about Jesus. And Jesus is about serving others. I pray Baron, that you stay strong in your faith of Jesus, and never stop chasing Him.
Came here via a Google+ post by Jerod Foster. Wonderful idea, Baron. I don’t do Twitter but hope that because of this comment you’ll see fit to include me in your count. May God richly bless you as you are a channel of blessing to this family.
Baron, Great idea and you are so far reaching! Saw the video…awesome, adorable, inspiring. I did not know that only one in 6 children in AFrica live past age 5…wow! My sister and I are doing the same thing….instead of gifts to each other we decided to donate to some friends who are ALSO adopting from Africa! They actually know the Knights! Small world and like minds. Also went to Give1Save1 website and donated to the Knights there! Blessings to you and to all those adopting these beautiful kids.

We brought our son Mareto home from Ethiopia this past February and have started the process to bring our next child home from Ethiopia. I am “adoption pals” with Jenna Knight. I think you are amazing and have captured the true meaning of Christmas in this post! I must be honest… I don’t really watch football (sorry)… BUT my cousin and a good friend are off the charts Steelers fans so they make sure my son knows who the best team is!
He is currently napping under his handmade fleece Steelers blanket and I couldn’t be happier about that!
Merry Christmas and MANY blessing!!
We were blessed to be in Ethiopia with the Knight family last month as we were both there to pass court for our children we are adopting. They are such a sweet family and little Emme is such a joy. Thank you for having a heart for orphans and giving them a forever family. I think you have figured it out…this is truly what Christmas is all about!
Nice thought and follow through, Baron. Our daughter and son both adopted two children this year. Anyone who has the heart for adoption needs lots of help. Thanks for doing something about it.
Dear Baron,
Thank you for this blog post, my friend who is a rabid (in a good way) Steelers fan ( @Steelergurl ) shared your blog with me. Thank you for writing this & letting people know, that there are many couples and singles who would love to have the ultimate Christmas gift this year – a child to call their own , to raise with unconditional love and to offer all the opportunities and encouragement humanly possible. After a long journey with infertility my husband and I are hoping for just such blessing and while we are financially stable, many ,who would be loving parents, cannot afford the costs of adoption so what you are doing is wonderful.
We are pursuing private or independent adoption here in the US – did you know that more than 70% of all adoptions are done privately (without using an adoption agency for placement of the child) and in 50% of private adoptions, the birth parents find the adoptive parents through a personal contact!
Since sometimes fortune favors the bold, here goes: In case there are any people reading your blog who themselves are (or know someone who is) faced with an unplanned pregnancy and without ability to raise the child in the way/ circumstances they feel the child deserves, please consider us and please read a little about us on our website and our birthmother letter http://melissaandtimadopt.wordpress.com/dear-birthmother/
Merry Christmas and Happy holidays to all!
Baron, My son, Kirby, sent me your link. He follows your blog and really likes your writing. Your project is a wonderful example of how every person can make a difference in some person’s life. I have often thought I would love to win the lottery and do big philanthropic giving to people/causes who need the money. I would even like to begin a seminary in New Mexico, as the state does not have one. So far, God has not seen fit to allow me to be a huge philanthropist.
However, I learned early in my life that even small giving has a big impact when it is done out of love and compassion for the wellbeing of others. Every Christmas, as well as throughout the year, our family supports groups like “Nothing but Nets (malaria nets) and the Heiffer Project (purchasing animals for families to become self-sufficient), as well as ministries through our local church. Christmas does not make sense unless our family is reaching out to help others. Giving is really so much fun, and it doesn’t matter if it is a little gift or a big gift.
Thanks for being a wonderful example of extravagant generosity. The world needs us all to be about this work!
You’re too sweet! You have the right idea about the holidays. It’s easy to get so caught up in gift receiving, gift giving, and spending money on frivolous purchases that we forget that money and resources are precious. You have a great idea, and I am glad that you are using social networking and your website to make a difference in a family’s life this holiday season. *bookmarking your blog*
Nice design, what is the name of template?
Right On Brother!
For the past couple of years, my wife and I decided the greatest gift that you can give someone is allowing them to impact others. So every year, we buy a backpack at Christmas time through World Vision in honor of our kids awesome teachers (we ask World Vision to put our teachers names on the gifts) for a child who doesn’t have the supplies to study. The teachers have been humbled beyond belief. One was even brought to tears. We say enough with the cute gifts … let’s give them the privilege to impact and encourage a child.
We do the same with cousins, aunts, uncles, and nephews of age. Backpacks, soccer balls, cattle, goats, water wells, you name it World Vision and other relief organizations have it. Imagine if just 100,000 people did this? How great of an impact could we have?
Thanks for being an inspiration Baron.

Baron, I hope my sons grow up to be like you. And by that I don’t necessarily mean an NFL player, but a man who lives his life with grace, dignity, and kindness… and isn’t afraid to express his faith. God bless you.
thanks for all the support and getting involved!
